Safety, Health, Environmental & Quality

SENET has a Management System in place that defines requirements, assigns responsibilities and provides guidance for its implementation. The Management System has been developed in accordance with the fundamentals, requirements and guidelines provided in ISO 9001 and ISO 9004. SENET is not accredited to ISO 9001 by any certification body within South Africa. The Management System has none the less been developed in line with the requirements of the ISO 9001 Standard. In terms of ISO 9001 no permissible exclusions to Clause 7 of the Standard would be applicable to SENET. The SENET Management System integrates the following standards:

  • ISO 9001:2008 - Quality Management Systems
  • ISO 14000:2004 - Environmental Management
  • OHSAS 18000:2007 - Occupational Health and Safety

As the above form a critical element in the successful completion of any contract, they are implemented and managed as one single system. This is all managed and distributed by the SENET SHEQ Manager and Project Document Controller who are responsible for ensuring system compliance across all contracts. It is important to note that SENET operates a system of generic procedures, checklists and specifications that are re-drafted into contract specific documents that only span the life of the contract.

The above approach allows the Project Team to identify and implement SHEQ systems that meet legislative and client requirements through the use of information established at specific phases. An example of information gathering, review and analysis is:

  • SHE audit
  • Risk assessment
  • Resource analysis and competence levels
  • Corrective Action Request analysis

Stages of the SHE System

The following diagram explains the SENET approach, from both organisational and contract levels, for identifying SHE requirements.

Determine the SHE impacts of the organisation / contract activities
Examine SHE legislation and regulations
Determine the significance of these impacts
Assess for applicability to the organisation / contract
SHE SYSTEM
  • Develop procedures to deal with normal operations
  • Develop procedures to deal with abnormal situations
  • Develop objectives and targets to improve the SHE performance
  • Designate responsibilities
  • Provide resources
  • Provide training
Check if the system is working consistently
Review whether the system is appropriate
